This looks very compelling! But... I'm not convinced it is depicted properly. I *think* the cable must go in and out ... to change the speed of the spacecraft by conserving angular momentum... just as a skater does by moving her arms in and out to increase/decrease rotational speed. So... when launching, the cable must be reeled into the center of the skyhook to increase the rotational velocity, and thus linear velocity of the spacecraft when it is released, so that it can escape the Earth's orbit. And conversely, returning spacecraft must be caught with a reeled in cable... and then reeled out, thus decreasing the linear velocity of the craft so that it can return safely to Earth. N'est ce pas?
You conveniently forget to talk about the energy needed to descent from the tether at 5:29 It's not free.

tethers are about as risky as being catapulted into the sky 1000km and landing in the spot you wanted. You can do the math for accuracy but do you trust the precision. Not only would you land but you would be refired and hope to land on your next destination for your "interstellar journey". For our tech the flinging would save on fuel but hopefully before we need to go through with building some system like this we find other ways to travel through our solar system
your animation is wrong on the 4:15 timeline it would hit the tether and push it back up to speed not get caught by the tether and released.
Fascinating but many unanswered questions. Could we build a durable cable with current materials? How complex would it be to build and to deploy in orbit? What if it spun out of control and crashed? Are there any other safety risks? What if it got hijacked by people with malicious intent, could it be used as a weapon?
So just a space sling shot eh?????...
This is really interesting, and has left me wanting to know why it isn't a bigger talking point/closer to a practical solution if it's "that easy" and effective? Would've loved to see the video touch on that.

Great idea
It looks like a cool idea, but it's never going to happen. It's an engineering nightmare. First you would have to build the thing in space, using conventional rockets. Then you have to start spinning the thing, making sure you don't hit the literally thousands of satellites flying around earth. Even if you would manage all that, you *still* need a rocket to get your ship to an altitude to hook up with this thing, a maneuver which would be so difficult, I doubt anyone would be willing to try it (mind you, they take days to maneuver and dock a resupply ship to the ISS). But the fact you still need a rocket makes this a useless idea, more than two thirds of the delta-v you need to achieve escape velocity is to get into earth orbit. Why would you build such a complicated thing only to make the last bit of the trip more efficient? That effort is better put into building a refuelling station in orbit, which will also give your rocket more delta-v, but with much more manageable engineering challenges than this idea imho...
